Creating a National Curriculum Development  Framework for Tanzania

Objectives

To assist the Tanzanian Institute of Education (TIE, Dar es Salaam) in its efforts to produce a national curriculum framework that could guide stakeholders in education while implementing major reforms in primary and secondary education.

Description

A team of experts from APS International and the Amstel Institute (www.science.uva/research/amstel) in cooperation with curriculum developers in TIE have developed a framework for a curriculum that could operate  both on national and on regional (district) level. The experts assisted the Tanzanian colleagues while they explored the practical consequences of the basic education concepts as these have been adopted by the Tanzanian government. The activities involved short term missions to Tanzania by Dutch experts, a study tour of TIE management and the director of the Tanzanian Department of Teacher Education to the Netherlands, and distant consultation of curriculum developers by Dutch authors. The project commenced in 2002 and was terminated Fall 2004. A final draft of the NCDF is ready for dissemination now.
